2026 Biologics Analytical Research & Development Intern Overview

The Biologics Analytical Research & Development organization is a world-class analytical team of more than 300 scientists that drives scientific excellence and process understanding through innovative solutions. We are responsible for all Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (CMC) analytical activities related to the development of AbbVie’s products. The intern will have the opportunity to learn and work on key aspects of developing our fundamental scientific understanding as it relates to AbbVie projects and processes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop chromatography, electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and/or biophysical techniques for the characterization of therapeutic proteins.
  • Optimize specialized protein separation techniques to enable the analysis of product quality attributes of interest.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and experimental problems.
  • Perform analytical tests to characterize the structure of therapeutic proteins, including antibody drug conjugates.
  • Compile and assess analytical data to prepare reports or manuscripts for the study.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Protein Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or other related field
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expected graduation date between December 2026 – June 2027
  • Exposure to protein separation techniques (ion exchange chromatography, reverse-phase liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, etc.),
  • Previous work experience in a laboratory setting and basic pipetting skills required.
  • Data visualization skills are a plus.
  • Effective writer and communicator with ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers.
  • High attention to detail, creativity in problem solving, strong interpersonal skills.
