2026 Global Epidemiology Intern Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

The Global Epidemiology department plays a critical role in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing real-world data and analytic strategies. Global Epidemiology studies include both descriptive evaluations as well as highly analytical study designs for evaluating causal hypotheses.  The team is responsible for designing and overseeing post-marketing safety studies as well as real-world evidence generation using state-of-the-art in-house data sources, such as health records, claims and registry data. 

As an Epidemiology Intern, you are at the forefront of an industry-leading pharmacoepidemiology organization within one of the largest and most innovative bio-pharmaceutical companies. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Gain an insider’s look at epidemiology’s contribution to successful product development in industry
  • Perform hands-on work in one or more therapeutic areas
  • Access public and private healthcare databases
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Learn a global approach to epidemiology
  • Have opportunities to network with key thought leaders in epidemiology and industry
  • Leverage innovative research approaches and partnerships to maximize the use of RWE and patient-centric outcomes research for informing internal and external decisions that positively impact patient lives

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Epidemiology, Pharmacoepidemiology, Biostatistics, Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research, or Pharmacoeconomics or other related field
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship
  • Excellent analytical/statistical skills
  • Familiarity with statistical software (e.g., SAS, R)
  • Experience conducting literature reviews
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ethics, professionalism, and an interest in the biopharmaceutical industry

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expected graduation date between December 2026 – June 2027
  • Completion of qualifying exams (in the dissertation phase) (note – candidates who have completed 1-2 years in their doctoral program are also encouraged to apply)
  • Experience using large healthcare data sets (administrative claims, EMR)
