Intern with DAWN: Grant Research & Development

Organization: DAWN
Location: Remote (organization based in Oregon, open to applicants nationwide)
Term: Min. 4 months, with option to extend
Compensation: Unpaid (volunteer-run nonprofit)

About DAWN

DAWN is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) delivering medical and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and supporting Ukrainian communities through health, cultural, and advocacy programs. Your work will directly strengthen lifesaving aid and community services.

Position Summary

We’re seeking Grant Research & Development Interns with experience (or strong interest) in finding grant opportunities and/or writing grants. You’ll help identify funders, prepare applications, and expand DAWN’s internal knowledge library so our team can move faster and win more support.

This role is ideal for students interested in nonprofit development, philanthropy, public policy, or program management. Past grants experience is preferred but not required. We will provide training and instructional materials to get beginners up to speed.

Responsibilities (you will choose one or more)

  • Prospecting: Find and vet grant leads aligned to DAWN programs; capture deadlines, eligibility, fit, and notes in spreadsheets.
  • Applications: Draft/fill forms, tailor descriptions and budgets, assemble attachments, proofread for compliance.
  • Knowledge Management: Expand and maintain our internal library (past proposals, boilerplates, budgets, metrics, FAQs); index and categorize materials for quick reuse.
  • Mandatory: Attending one or more check-in video calls per week. Scheduling of these calls can be very flexible to suit your needs. This position is also suitable for people working odd hours.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with grant prospecting and/or grant writing (coursework or prior internships welcome).
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions and written procedures.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Self-motivated; able to work independently and take initiative.
  • Comfortable with Google Sheets/Docs/Drive

What We Offer

  • Hands-on experience across the full grants lifecycle and a portfolio of writing samples.
  • Templates, mentorship, and regular editorial feedback from DAWN’s grants team.
  • Flexible scheduling, clear scopes, and supportive check-ins.
  • Training on practical prospecting and proposal workflows used by nonprofits.
